My holiday season and all of January was essentially fishless for me. Between travel and weather, it's been tough to find good opportunities to get out.
With a few breaks in the weather and some free time, I've made two trips in February with only 4 fish caught.
Trip 1
Mack and I have been talking about a Raleigh area flow that has a particular feature suitable for winter fishing. Neither of us had ever been to this location, but were interested in checking it out. Last Sunday (2/2/14), he was off work and I had a few free hours so we headed out. The only fish caught were in water in the upper 40s. I landed this little pig and one dink on a small plastic shad on a beetle spinner.
Trip 2
Today, I took my son out on one of our local favorites. We trolled various jigs and cranks and took home two small crappie. He caught the 1st and biggest. I caught the other one. Water temps were in the low 40s.
Not exactly a stellar start to 2014. My wife and I are expecting our 3rd child in a few weeks. This spring may be tough for me to find time in the canoe. I hope some of my work travel will afford me the opportunity to wet a line here and there. No matter how many times I go, it will never be enough!
About Me
- Fish Whisperer
- Raleigh, NC
- Born in Richmond, Virginia, grew up in Kernersville, North Carolina, and now reside in Raleigh. I attribute most of my fishing prowess to my father, who took me fishing often as a child. We would regularly do float trips on the James River in Virginia, which is where I learned to love canoeing and river fishing. Unfortunately, my father has passed, but he lives on through my passion for chasing fish from my canoes. I intend to pass this love for fishing and the outdoors onto my children and can't wait to share these experiences with them. I currently have 4 canoes: Customized Old Town Guide 119, Customized Mohawk 16 Royalex, Coleman Scanoe, and 12' Indian River Solo.
